The piano music at the beginning is "Scenes from the Childhood" by Robert Schumann. Orchestral music with a male choir is from Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem Mass. Male voices sing "Dies Irae", the female sings "Lacrimosa". There is also specially composed music by Dave Moore and Dick Heckstall-Smith.

Ok, and what that has to do with a film that talks about hidden family problems such as incest, violence and suicide? The phrase was written by Goethe, but does not match this context.
