Maps (Kartat)

Four flat-colour landscapes come up in turn, hills as overlapping blocks of yellow, lime and green with a plain disc for a sun, and in each one a map cover stands upright in the scene like a signpost. The pairing of cover to country is the idea. Ferns and a stream behind PERUSKARTTA, with a fat cartoon bumblebee flying straight at the camera in front of it, farmland behind ULKOILU KARTTA, reeds and a channel marker behind MERIKARTTA, and the road map set at the vanishing point where a straight road goes over the hill, exactly where you would want one. The covers then slide in one at a time to line up on a sandhill under a KARTTAPAIKKA sign drawn as a traffic light with three coloured discs, so the shop sign is itself a road sign. One line is spoken across the fifteen seconds, "Ota kartta kaveriksi karttapaikasta" [Take a map along for company, from a Karttapaikka], and the stockists scroll along the bottom as a band of hard type laid over the drawing.
